88 the future is light – and solid! it is used for surfboards, cruise ships and musical instruments – and now also for the new hülsta collections. we are talking about kiri wood. low weight, flexibility and stability characterise this miracle wood. these features are also reflected in our work philosophy, as we are developing new hülsta trends that will also be low in weight and flexible. kiri allows us to perfectly combine elegance and practicality in furniture production. a good reason to provide a few more details about this extraordinary type of wood. the all-round talent kiri wood is a genuine all-round talent. it’s therefore unsurprising that – due to its unique properties – it is now used in furniture production. flame-retardant and very resistant to moisture, rot and parasites, it is exceptionally versatile. the wood is low in weight yet very stable, thus making it perfect for intricate manufacturing techniques. the paulownia tree, kiri in japanese, is now also planted in germany and grows particularly fast. we know what we are talking about: at hülsta in stadtlohn, kiri trees now welcome our guests. 1. precious wood veneer 2. solid wood core of kiri 3. precious wood veneer beautifully light madera is the first hülsta collection that has been manufactured using kiri wood. the core made from kiri makes the new furniture much lighter than classical constructions, whilst the innovative mix of materials saves numerous resources. by the way, madera looks absolutely stunning: the madera combination shown here carries the ”selection“ label of the iconic award 2017.

10 stolz magazine talked to designer martin ballendat about the design process – and the role of the shirt collar. with cuello, a striking upholstered armchair, hülsta becomes a talking point. this noticeable piece of seating furniture is a genuine quick-change artist: its backrest can be folded over like a collar – the translation from its spanish name into german means exactly that. in the low position, the armchair offers an open and communicative way of sitting. with the collar turned up, it cocoons the person sitting in it, thus providing a perfect retreat to have a cup of tea or a little snooze. stolz talked to cuello designer martin ballendat about ideas and how to implement them into the market. can you remember the moment when you had the inspiration for this unusual armchair? martin ballendat: as it happens, my shirt collar did indeed play a big part in the process (he laughs). after a presentation, i was sitting at my desk in the office and – lost in thought – i folded the starched collar of my white shirt up and down. this is when i had the idea and i started sketching. how does this first idea turn into an armchair? i gave my sketches to a japanese designer and asked him to create a few illustrations. initially, i placed cuello rather in the office market. cocooning is a huge trend in offices; in many companies, regeneration zones are part of the standard facilities. however, my designer added a homelier twist, thus the concept took its course. what role did hülsta play? i really liked my idea, which is why i only wanted to offer it to renowned manufacturers. a discussion with the hülsta management team at the cologne furniture fair was the decisive factor: the company was looking for extraordinary designs – and i had something that could create a real impact. when all the contracts were signed a few weeks later, we built the first model in our workshop … … using the thermal camping mat of your daughter. yes, it happened to be in our workshop at the time. we had already tested quite a few different materials for the cuello collar, but nothing came anywhere close to the thermal camping mat. in terms of flexibility and stiffness, the material is unbeatable. we have therefore even used a thermal camping mat for the first functional version that was signed off by hülsta. then we went into production. at the hülsta partner event in september, we already had a solution that was ready for series production – not involving a thermal camping mat, of course. how do a design and a manufacturer generally come together? it depends: i have been in this business for 25 years; nowadays, i work differently. as a young designer, i was happy to get an order – and therefore some security – from furniture manufacturers. today, i have 16 employees, 1000 square metres of office space and have a regular income from licences for furniture designs. on the one hand, i have established myself in a way, that allows me to make pre-investments. on the other hand, our office is now so big that we cannot afford to come up with average designs. we are basically forced to be innovative. did the cuello idea come at the right time? i think so. cuello is a genuine eye-catcher and has a high recognition value, it stands for awakening and innovation and is therefore a perfect match for hülsta, who are certainly taking a new approach. discover the hülsta furniture world: www.huelsta.com 7507005004005007001050

12 like on cloud nine the boxspring trends for 2017 not just incredibly comfortable but also very stylish: the boxspring beds from hülsta have many enthusiastic fans. for 2017, the collection will have even more new designs, trendy colours and new fabrics. stolz will give you an introduction into the new trends. in 2017, blue will show many facets: for instance, as an elegant night blue or in a modern fresh tone that reminds you of typical demin looks. selected grey and beige tones will perfectly match. they have an elegant and exquisite efect. especially for boxspring, these calming and timelessly beautiful colours are our favourites for 2017. like a day at the seaside blue hues, which remind us of the clear blue sky of the last holiday, are very much in trend for boxspring in 2017 – as are sunny yellow tones: put together, these two colours bring back memories of the sun and sea. especially soft shades in blue are particularly suitable for rooms that help you to relax and rest. yellow accents and accessories have a similar efect to rays of sunshine: inspiring, activating and warming. the 2017 colour trend is therefore a true wellness trend. discover the hülsta furniture world: www.huelsta.com
13 submerge in they add balanced colours, an invigorating and beautiful-to-the-touch feel to the boxspring world of hülsta: we are talking about the 200 fabrics that hülsta customers can choose from to create their individual dream bed. our stolz team has talked to hülsta product manager christof hofjann about current textile trends. christof, this is a new edition of the fabric collection. what can we expect from this update? what do most hülsta customers purchase? many fresh ideas, even more colour and fabulous materials. we have travelled a lot to view fabric collections and to discuss new design and fabric manufacturers such as jab or alcantara. the essence of our travels and talks have been bundled within the new fabric collection, which ofers very impressive combinations for versatile designs. trends of renowned many love clearly deined lines and pure looks in grey and beige. however, the absolute trend are beds in velvety fabrics and bold colours. we have, for instance, included a bright turquoise that we are all very enthusiastic about. do you advocate going for bold colours? deinitely! colour creates an atmosphere that is inspiring and perfectly sets the scene for classic designs. a mix of materials is especially exciting: thick, almost three- dimensional, fabrics perfectly work on cushions with minimalist boxspring bed looks. we have also launched covers for the headboard, which allow you to add new colourful accents.
14 a home in the city how do people want to live? in days gone by, many dreamed of large villas with a sea view or an idyllic location in the countryside; however, nowadays, lofts and apartments in the main cities are particularly sought after. people are drawn to urban areas. the decision for life in the big city is a decision for contemporary living. the freedom provided by the city is counterbalanced by using your home as a retreat for tranquillity: the cocoon that allows us to pause for a moment before being drawn back into an exciting world. you need to be rich with ideas, not necessarily space, to make living in the city a great experience. it is therefore not surprising that creative interiors featuring clever storage concepts are conquering the internet. residents, architects, bloggers: they all talk about their lifestyle and their ideas to make perfect use of limited space. these – often unconventional – ideas were met with much enthusiasm, as they show life as it is: the whole wide city outside plus the personal little space within your own four walls. over the last couple of months, we have travelled to many diferent countries and cities and returned with a lot of inspirations. our aim: we want to make people, who live in the city happy with furniture, which is versatile, lexible and space-saving, whilst ensuring that a house will always be a home. a challenge? not if you are well prepared, says the hülsta interior designer thomas puppe. small rooms – big impact. • let the sunlight in: light colours make rooms appear bigger and relect the light better. dark coloured surfaces draw the eye and take centre stage, making the room look smaller. • set your sights high: high ceilings ofer the possibility to make use of the height of the room. whether a classical solution featuring a loft bed, an unconventional shelving design or storage for a mountain bike – especially in small rooms, the entire potential of the room should be fully used. • love of tidiness: get rid of anything you don’t need – and keep hold of what is precious. keep your small but nice home practical and manageable. storage units with both closed and open compartments provide a perfect balance between a tidy and decorative look. • stay lexible: the right choice of furniture allows you to redesign your home and to adjust it to changing requirements. wall-mounted, stacked or freestanding – suitable systems allow you to create diferent looks even in small spaces. • add colour to your life: accessories and textiles add new accents and can give a room a totally diferent impact without changing the entire interiors. keep life interesting! discover the hülsta furniture world: www.huelsta.com

16 hülsta is a climate-neutral furniture manufacturer. the climate pact for the furniture industry by the “deutsche gütegemeinschaft möbel” (dgm) (german quality association for furniture) has been significantly extended. “hülsta’s commitment reinforces the industry’s sense of responsibility towards the environment and its people”, says dgm managing director jochen winning during the award ceremony with hülsta managing director oliver bialowons. on the basis of its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, hülsta has had its co2-foot print determined by the climate protection initiative and has neutralised all emissions by acquiring high-quality climate protection certiicates. within the furniture industry, the brand is therefore one of the irst companies to directly introduce the complete neutralisation of its co2- emissions. being part of the dgm climate pact for instance allows us to support a reforestation project in costa rica, where the increase in trees and plants ofsets our emissions. in order to ofset our indirect emissions, we have invested in a wind energy project in taiwan. this project contributes to the substitution of fossil fuels, to the know-how transfer between countries as well as to reducing the reliance of the island on importing fossil energy. at the dgm climate pact, emissions are classed in three sections. in each of the sections, hülsta has not only reduced the emissions but neutralised them. thanks to this commitment, we are now oicially a climate neutral furniture manufacturer. section 1 includes all direct emissions by the company, for instance fuels for company-own private cars and lorries as well as heating and cooling agents. section 2 includes all indirect emissions, which are created during the production of the energy the company uses, such as electric power, district heating, steam or cooling energy. section 3 includes all indirect emissions, which are created during the daily processes and the product life cycle, for instance the travel to work by the employees, external logistics, water consumption as well as the use of the product by the end-user. klimaneutraler möbelhersteller* climate-neutral furniture manufacturer hersteller-nr. / manufacturer-no. k16-005 prüfnummer / control number 16-005-01 1 2 3 * durch / by co2-zertiikate / certiicates nach den richtlinien für den klimaschutz der deutschen gütegemeinschaft möbel • according to the guidelines for climate protection of the dgm • www.klimaneutral-dgm.de emissionsklasse für möbel emission class for furniture kastenmöbel / free cabinets hersteller-nr. / manufacturer-no. 15003 kollektion / collection / modell / model kollektion 2015/2016 prüfnummer / control number 2015003-02 a b c d a emissionsklasse für möbel nach der ral-registrierung ral-rg 437 der deutschen gütegemeinschaft möbel • emission class for furniture according to ral-rg 437 • www.emissionslabel.de the collections/models marked with the emissions label comply with the award requirements for the emissions label of the deutsche gütegemeinschaft möbel e.v. 17 manfred bräuer n nn klima- freundliche hrrstellung henning scholtz „the blue angel is the oicial environmental sign of the federal environment agency. for almost 40 years, it has labelled environment-friendly products and services, thus providing guidance for consumers. hülsta is a furniture manufacturer, who lives the “blue angel philosophy” and has shared our commitment to label environment-friendly products for more than 20 years. together, we have achieved a lot. henning scholtz, director of the environment-friendly department at ral ggmbh protection of the environment climate-neutral manufacturing sustainable raw materials and production green is in. nowadays, ecological balance is always on the agenda of many furniture manufacturers. however, 20 years ago, things looked very diferent. “when we were awarded the first “blue angel“ for our furniture in 1993, it attracted a great deal of attention“, remembers manfred bräuer from hülsta. until then, hardly anyone had reviewed the feasibility of the “blue angel” requirements in the furniture industry and the demand by consumers was rather moderate. however, for years manfred bräuer and his colleagues have made sure that the protection of the environment and the consumers was irmly anchored in the company philosophy. together with our partners, they were deeply committed to develop particularly environment-friendly coating materials, lacquers, glues and adhesives. the “blue angel” was meant to inally relect the total commitment – which it did, then as now. for 20 years, all hülsta modular units and base frames have been awarded the “blue angel for low emissions”. holding the “blue angel” certiicate for the irst time? “that was fabulous” remembers bräuer. “it was the reward for really hard work, which still continues to this day.” this shows that the criteria of the best known environmental sign are constantly tightened. he is convinced that this is a must in order to ensure that the sign remains credible. hülsta keeps pace, is innovative and continues to launch new products with even more environment-friendly components to the market. in close cooperation with international suppliers, we have therefore developed several intelligent surface coatings, such as everfinish and evergloss, which protect furniture from daily wear and tear. time to put your feet up? certainly not, according to manfred bräuer. “our furniture is manufactured in an environment-friendly way, which already by far exceeds the respective legal requirements. however, we do not rest on our laurels, but instead we keep on working to write environmental history in our industry”. in cooperation with the dgm, we have developed an emission label for furniture, which is similar to the energy labelling concept, thus helping the consumer to quickly and easily ind low-emission furniture.

19 once again, our migrating bird has gone into the big wide world. to russia, to be precise. just a stone’s throw away from moscow‘s red square, it proved that it not only is an exceptionally active migrating bird, but also a true quick-change artist. 76 years of hülsta and nine years of trio makes 85 years together – a good reason to celebrate. ”happy birdy-day“ was the motto at the furniture store of our partner trio, which we celebrated together with 150 design experts. they had to take part in a competition consisting of guessing the works of famous artists and then transferring these onto a plain white birdy. birdy with an abstract pattern from wassily kandinsky or even as warhol’s marilyn monroe including bright red puckered lips? we hadn’t seen our bird in such a way, but we loved it! for the artists, it was worth the efort, as at the end, everyone voted for the three best birdies under thunderous applause. after a tight head-to-head race, the winner received a now! moon birdy and the second and third placed were given a fabric-covered birdy. as a souvenir, the artists could then take their own masterpieces home. discover the hülsta furniture world: www.huelsta.com
